Gesa Schwantes is currently the Director of the Architectural Conservation Laboratory (ACLab), a research, teaching and service laboratory for conservation science at the Faculty of Architecture. With conservation degrees from HKB Bern, Switzerland, HKU and Tongji University Shanghai, Dr. Schwantes has over 10 years of physical conservation experience of wall paintings, murals and decorated architectural surfaces on historic built heritage sites in Germany, Switzerland and China.
In professional practice, she works with a wide range of materials including stone, lime plaster, clay plaster, lime paint, tempera paint and watercolor. She also conducts surveys and analysis of building fabric, decoration and interior finishes and makes recommendations for future conservation and intervention strategies.
In academic work, she conducts research in architectural and material conservation at The University of Hong Kong and in collaboration with the conservation laboratory at Tongji University in Shanghai. She also lectures and teaches in the area of material conservation in analytic investigations of materials, identification of deterioration processes and design of sustainable conservation interventions using compatible materials.
