The University of Hong Kong offers Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs. Candidates of MPhil and PhD conduct research work under the supervision of at least one member of the University’s teaching staff. For many years, the Department of Urban Planning and Design (previously the Centre of Urban Planning and Environmental Management) has been successfully training research students within the MPhil and PhD programs and nurturing them into scholars in areas of urban planning, urban design, housing management and transport policy and planning. At present, there are 55 PhD  students and 3 MPhil students, who are from Hong Kong, Mainland China, and other parts of Asia.

Major research expertise within the Department includes but is not limited to the following:

  • Planning and managing sustainable cities and regions;
  • Urban and regional development in China (particularly the Pearl River Delta Region and Shanghai);
  • Planning and management of urban transport systems with emphasis on sustainable transport systems;
  • Housing policy and planning, and the development of sustainable housing systems; Information technology applications in urban planning, including GIS;
  • Planning sustainable communities;
  • Globalization and urban development processes;
  • Population and sustainability issues in Hong Kong;
  • High-density urban development and management.
