Application Deadline is February 4, 2022 at 12:00 noon (HKT)

The Division admits up to 48 local and international students to the MLA program each year. Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree with honours from HKU or a qualification of equivalent standard from another university. Students whose first degree was not taught in English need to demonstrate competency in the English language.

The Division welcomes applications from students with a broad range of academic and cultural interests, and from both design and non-design backgrounds.

Admission is both rigorous and highly competitive. Candidates should show that they:

  • have an understanding of landscape (i.e. both the biophysical and built environment) and the landscape architectural discipline
  • have a strong interest in issues relating to the environment and community
  • can think critically, and have an aptitude for design and its representation
  • can be collaborative and are willing to learn

The MLA Admissions Panel selects candidates for interview on the basis of their academic background, working experience, letters of recommendation, and submitted portfolio of original creative works and short essay. Admission is offered on the basis of both interview performance and their submissions. Information on the MLA program and on application for admission to the HKU MLA program, can be found on the HKU and Faculty of Architecture websites:

The HKU online admissions system opens in December. The MLA program is full-time study only. All students who are accepted into the program (irrespective of background) are required to participate in the MLA Prerequisite Course. This is a two week intensive course (starting in the middle of August) which introduces students to the Division and its teaching and learning. Students need to ensure that they can attend and participate in the whole course, as successful completion of it is a prerequisite to entering the main MLA program.
