Abstract

The speaker has long engaged in research on urbanization in south-west China and has accumulated experiences and academic achievements. He will share under the following topics and finally prospect future development.

1) Understanding the complexity of urbanization in China. In 2012, urbanization in China had touched a “turning point” that the urbanization process started to slow down, and some cities suffered from a shortage of “peasant workers”. The research will go deep into the reason why urbanization in China has arrived at a “post-urbanization” stage earlier than expected

2) Revealing the mechanism of urbanization in the Chengdu-Chongqing area. The research finds that there is considerable heterogeneity in the path of urbanization, population structure, and existing problems between the Chengdu-Chongqing area and east regions.

3) Analyzing the particularity of urbanization in a vast country. National population mobility and strong economic support from the central government shape a unique urbanization mode in inland areas. The traditional theory could not adequately explain the urbanization process in China and needs further development.

4) Analyzing the structure of urban distribution in the Chengdu-Chongqing area. Because of the above particularity, the path of economic and social development does not follow the predictions of traditional theory, and the inter-city relationship of competition and cooperation is also different.
