M+ and the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Hong Kong organized a series of events from Nov.4th – Nov. 13th 2020 to mark the arrival of the Archigram Archive in Hong Kong and to reappraise Archigram’s multidisciplinary practice and global relevance. One of these events, a Call for Drawings organised by the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Hong Kong takes place in parallel with the Symposium.
Archigram’s vivid drawings and collages became representative of a generation dissatisfied with the prescriptive solutions of mainstream modernism. Like pop artists, they imbued their architecture with the technology and consumer culture that surrounded them, and did so unapologetically. They understood that Architecture happened as much by visualizing as it did by building.
In this spirit, we accepted and received submissions from students, practitioners, and educators in the field of Architecture with the ambition that they would in some ways be suggestive of or influenced by the types of strategies, attitudes and issues present in Archigram’s work.
The work we received led to the creation of an Archigram Cities Drawings Instagram page https://www.instagram.com/archigramcitiesdrawings/ exhibiting a broad range of submissions and in parallel a Call for Drawings Virtual Gallery https://my.matterport.com/show/?m=tEdMi4dpwgh representative of a more select group of submissions that compelled us to engage in discussion with the authors. The Virtual Gallery provides an environment to see the work and links to the video discussions.
