In 1969 he started his professional career in the colonial government, a colonial surveyor called Sr Prof. Wan Man-yee BBS JP “MY”. This abbreviated way to address him has since become a part of him.
At an age of 28, after serving the Government with his last grade as a Senior Estate Surveyor, MY asked himself how life could serve him better. He left. In his mid-forties, after serving a leading developer in HK as an Executive Director for over a decade, he asked himself how life could serve him even better. He left. MY has asked the same question over and over again after he has devoted himself to community services in various positions. He now leads a steady life, refusing to retire.
MY wishes to share his 50 years working experience with the surveying students at HKU, step by step. He has found “Learning to Learn” a suitable starting point to warm up the working relationship. “Learn to Learn” was a birthday talk he delivered to young people on the eve of his 60th birthday. Now, it will not be a repetition but used as an illustration to steer/guide the students to learn to be inquisitive, objective, diversely resourceful, and confident with humility. Also at this introductory lecture, he intends to work with the students on a series of lectures on useful topics and those of interest to the students. He subtly believes that the community benefits from the service of more robust surveyors from HKU.
He has covered a wide spectrum of surveying work in land administration, site planning, building planning, project management, construction supervision and litigation. Additionally, his Government committee work and duties at NGOs enrich his life and his practice. With some research, there will probably be some interesting episodes to share later on.
