Urban development may occur through diffusion (sprawl) or coalescence. This research selects 363 prefecture level or higher level cities in China and examines their dynamic change of urban form in 1995–2005 and 2005–2015. Further, the relationship between urban growth pattern and urban vitality was explored using data mining under the emerging multi-source geographic big data environment. The results of this research provide important input to China’s urban master planning in the future.
