Research Interests include

  • Professional processes and management

  • Professional implications of computer applications

  • Collaborative design tools

  • Educational uses of computing - I am Associate Editor for the International Journal of Design Computing and am interested in proposals for papers on computing and design education

  • Facility management : including the use of computers -- I have recently guest-edited a special issue of Automation in Construction (volume 9, issue 2) on Facility Management and have two more underway.

  • Rapid Prototyping: I have guest edited (with Branko Kolarevic) a special issue of Automation in Construction on Rapid Prototyping (volume 11, issue 3) and maintain a Webpage of RP research.

Current Teaching and Supervision:

M Arch courses:

  • M Arch year 1 Design Studio, in which we address urban design issues of high density cities. Current projects look at urban morphologies
  • The Computer in Architecture: a review of current professional applications and interests

  • Management and Design: investigating issues of management and the digital world.

  • The Virtual Design Studio in which graduate students work on collaborative design projects with students in other parts of the world, using the Internet and the Web to collaborate. We have published critical reviews of this work in our book Virtual Design Studio as well as being documented in some of my papers above.

Examples from these classes are available online and can be accessed through the class projects homepage.

Research students:

  • Currently supervising research students (M Sc M Phil and PhD) in design and construction management, virtual reality, digital design tools and design processes

  • Examined students from universities in Hong Kong and worldwide

  • Successful completions in field of digital design, cognitive science, design education and design management
