Sustainable Architecture Case Studies

Duisburg Nord Landscape Park, Emscher, Germany

| BEER | HKU Arch |

Latz + Partner's has set a precedent for generating obsolete industrial lands in urban areas, though the park was only completed lately. Its influence is for good reason, instead of creating a tabula rasa surface for development, the design attempts to celebrate the area's industrial past by integrating vegetation and industry. The intervention preserves the remains of the old installations as valuable (industrial) hertiage, and makes them available for public enjoyment. The evident contradictions add to the park's overall effect.

360 deg. Views (QuickTime VR)

[View from the 60 m platform]   [View on the ground level]

The most interesting highlight of the park is an impressive panoramic view from the platform of the blast furnace about 60 meters high. The remaining production plants of the mining industry can be seen scattered along the Rhine in the Ruhr area. With good weather conditions, even the Duseldorf TV tower located at a far distance can be seen.

From the view on the ground level, you can see other interesting things including the hydrodynamic tank, overview of the blast furnace, the wind water tower, and the old production plants of the Thyssen Krupp AG, a company which owned this site.
