Abstract

The Sydney Opera house is perhaps the most famous and popular modern building in the world. But the very fame of its image has somewhat obscured the radicality of its initial design. Its architect Jørn Utzon wanted it to be a manifesto. How did the dramatic saga of the building process turn it into a monument?
